The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary guide for managing risks that artificial intelligence can create for individuals, organizations, and society. It helps teams build trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI systems rather than treating risk as a final compliance check. The framework organizes the work around four connected functions: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. Its companion playbook provides suggested actions teams can adapt to their context. NIST also publishes supporting profiles, crosswalks, use cases, and a dedicated profile for generative AI risks.
